What is the definition of a tracking number?
*A tracking number is a specific number assigned to each parcel just before being shipped. This number works as a unique ID code and allows people to follow and track their package till it reaches its final destination.
This special code can be used multiple times, as long as your parcel has not reached the destination yet and you want to see where it is at the moment.
Whether you need to know which hub it is at or estimate the approximate delivery time, you shall be able to do it with a combination of letters and numbers you are given upon the purchase.
This means that if there is no special number that is unique and yours only – the information cannot be considered confidential, this means Alltracking will not be able to display it on your screen. This is necessary to avoid fraud and information leaks.
The company's tracking numbers are meant to help you follow the order through from the departure point to the destination point without any second-guessing and doubts.
You enter the Track and Trace section, introduce the special combination you have, and have the information displayed to you. This is what the e-post-global system helps customers do.
Canada Postal Number Formats
Canada's Postal tracking numbers can be found on the receipts. Whether on the paper receipt or as an email confirmation you will see the combination that consists of letters and digits. It will match the number that is located on your package.
Tracking numbers are typically:
- 11 or 13 alphanumeric characters ending in CA
- or 16 digits
The tracking number is required for further actions performed on the Alltracking website.
Without this unique code it is difficult to track and trace your parcel or shipment.
What does Canada Post tracking number look like?
If you sent a package through Priority™, Xpresspost™, or Regular Parcel™ with delivery confirmation, the tracking number will be at the bottom of your tracking receipt.
If you sent your parcel from Canada to the U.S. or internationally with EMS, the tracking number will appear on your copy of the shipping label as well as on your receipt.
The tracking number format usually has 13 numeric digits. But also can have 16 numeric digits - 7035114477138472, 4002847016405018.
- or the parcel can have 13 numeric and alphabetic characters - RY982465507CN, LZ213465621CN, LM071894960CA.
Small packages may be unregistered and go without tracking.
The Canada Post tracking number format looks like this:
For small packages weighing up to 2 kg – Rx123456785CA;
For parcels weighing from 2 to 20 kg – Cx123456785CA;
For EMS shipments the example is: Ex123456785CA.
The 13-digit track number is encrypted: the type of departure in the first letter, and the uniqueness of the number is confirmed by the second letter and all numbers. The last two letters indicate the country of the postal service, in this case, CA is Canada.
Your tracking number is necessary at every stage of the delivery process. Unfortunately, if you can’t find your tracking number, Alltracking cannot get it for you.
The “Track and Trace” button on the upper panel is where you need to get when you want to find your package on our website.

Then enter the given code into the field and click Track button. The next thing you know the informaton regarding your package or shipment will be displayed on your screen.

If you sent the parcel via the Canada Post office, you must have a paper receipt with the tracking number on it, that can help you find the package updates in the global system. You may also have it with the confirmation letter in your email.
If this isn’t the case and you requested this service with a sender, contact the sender of the item to receive the tracking number for the shipment.
If you ordered your item online, you may find the tracking number in a shipping confirmation email from the shop or the seller.
You can also try tracking an item using a delivery notice card or reference number.
Canada Post is known to be one of the fastest postal service companies in the world. Ages of dedicated and performed duties on the highest level have placed Canada Post at the top.
The package usually travels from one hub to another, but the customer can track it from point A to point B (destination point). Sometimes it takes longer for information to be updated because the shipment is in the middle of somewhere, leaving one place and departing to another. We strongly recommend you wait until the information appears in the system.
If you waited long enough and you feel like there may be a problem, contact the Canada Post Customer Service team for clarification.

Track and Trace System in Canada
Canada Post is the state postal service of Canada, providing delivery of international mail and domestic correspondence for individuals and legal entities. It also provides express mail service and delivers EMS items.
Canada Post EMS rates will be higher, but the delivery speed will be faster too.
We can list two types of general prohibitions and restrictions, that are common to all postal services: by weight and size and by content.
The Canada Post's official website has all the information you need. Available types of shipments, as well as possible restrictions on the transfer of goods, also depend on the country of the recipient.
The can be multiple reasons for that. First of all, consider giving the information some time to be updated on our website.Being a part of the global e tracking system we need to integrate information received from Canada Post to the information from our website.
Let’s say you use Alltracking on a daily basis to check the information changes, but they do not happen. Do not think anything negative before you find out the real reason behind it. There can be numerous reasons for non-trackage of the parcel you need information for. But before any panic starts, customers are adviced to consider it being stuck in transit. This means that the status of the package has not moved in a long time and there is no news that the tracking website can share.
After any significant changes take place, the status of the parcel will be updated accordingly. But if you do not see it straight away, do not consider the package lost – it can just be temporarily delayed.
Before you start to panic – do not panic. The information on the website is updated regularly but wait long enough for it to change and show you the newest information.
Also, sometimes mail or shipment is stuck in a hub. Before the parcel reaches another destination, it can stay silent for a while. Sometimes parcels do go missing. That is when you will need the assitance for the Customer Support team.

There can multiple cases when a customer may have a parcel claim but most of the time they fall into two categories:
Damaged package claim
If it happens that Canada Post handled you a damaged package, you are entitled to complain.
Sometimes it may happen that maik items can be damaged or destroyed during the shipping process. These cases are rare though. But still if you received a damaged item package in the mail, please contact Canada Post about it. The company should offer you a compensation for the insured value of the package and the cost of postage (after the investigation takes place).
The second well-known package claim is:
Missed package

The history of Canada Post
Originally known as Royal Mail Canada (the operating name of the Post Office Department of the Canadian government founded in 1867, French: Poste Royale Canada), rebranding was done to the "Canada Post" name in the late 1960s, even though it had not yet been separated from the government.
On October 16, 1981, the Canada Post Corporation Act came into effect. This abolished the Post Office Department and created the present-day Crown Corporation, which provides postal service.
The act was aimed to set a new direction for the postal service by ensuring the postal service's financial security and independence.
Canada Post operates as a group of companies called The Canada Post Group. It employs approximately 64,000 full and part-time employees.
The Corporation is also interested in Purolator Courier, Innovapost, Progistix-Solutions, and Canada Post International Limited.
In 2000, Canada Post created a company called Epost, which allowed customers to receive their bills from participating merchants and institutions online for free. In 2007, Epost was absorbed into Canada Post.
Interesting historical facts
- On August 3, 1527, in St. John's, Newfoundland, the first known letter was sent from present-day Canada.
While in St. John's, John Rut wrote a letter to King Henry VIII about his findings and planned voyage. Mail delivery within Canada first started in 1693 when the Portuguese-born Pedro da Silva was paid to deliver between Québec City and Montréal. Official postal services began in 1775, under the control of the British Government up to 1851.
- The first postage stamp (designed by Sandford Fleming) went into circulation in Canada that same year. It was not until 1867 when the newly formed Canada created the Post Office Department as a federal government department (The Act for the Regulation of the Postal Service) headed by a Cabinet minister, the Postmaster General of Canada.
The Act took effect on April 1, 1868, providing uniform postal service throughout the newly established dominion. The Canadian post office was designed around the British service as created by Rowland Hill, who introduced the concept of charging mail by weight and not destination, along with the concept creation of the postage stamp. The new service was traded under the name The Royal Mail Canada.
-Today, several historical sites related to the history of the Post Office Department of Canada can be visited in the country.
In Ontario, the first Toronto Post Office is still in operation. The site of Scotiabank Arena was once the Canada Post Delivery Building. Also notable are the Vancouver Main Post Office and the Dawson, Yukon, Post Office, a National Historic Site of Canada. In Peggys Cove, Nova Scotia, a nineteenth-century lighthouse acts, as a seasonal post office for the tiny coastal community.
