At Australia Post, when delivery of an article cannot be completed, the item is either returned to the sender or returned to the Mail Redistribution Centre.

Obviously, if you printed the wrong address on the shipping label, didn't include a return address, or poorly packaged the item, Australia Post cannot be held responsible for it. In most of the other cases, Australia Post will investigate the case and refund you.

    2) Damaged tracked parcels

If the item arrives damaged, the first thing you need to do is get in contact with the seller as soon as possible. ( this is for those who purchased an item online that was later on sent with Australia Post). The seller will discuss the issue with Australia Post. In this case the seller is responsible for the condition of items when you receiev them. If the item is damaged you can enclose pictures, put it all in writing, ideally in an email that you need to send to the seller. The seller then will investigare what happened with Australia Post and either refund you or give you a substitute product.

    3) Confiscated tracked items

Australia Post delivery may still be delayed for reasons beyond its control.

Customs processing issue: If a package contains a prohibited item when entering Australia or another country (if the package originates from Australia and goes abroad), then it will most likely be confiscated at customs by officials.

Alternatively, if a valuable item is being shipped overseas, it may be subject to Value Added Tax (VAT) which must be paid before the package is cleared by customs and continues its journey. Please check that your item is not on the prohibited items list by visiting the Australia Post website.

Australia Post, also known as AusPost, operates as the successor to the General Post Office, the custodian of traditional postal services and has been linking Australia to the world for ages. It also continues to strive for excellence by following technological and social advances such as operational innovation, digitalization and maximizing customer satisfaction through postal efficiency.

    Branches and locations

Currently there are 4,320 post offices across Australia, including over 2,500 in rural and remote areas. Australia Post and its network of post offices provide many functions across Australia – letters, parcels and delivery services, selling postage stamps and providing post office boxes.

    The history of AusPost

Australia Post, formally the Australian Postal Corporation, is the government business enterprise that provides postal services in Australia.

The head office of Australia Post is located in Bourke Street, Melbourne, which also serves as a post office.

Australia Post is the successor of the Postmaster-General's Department, which was established at federation in 1901 as the successor to colonial post services.

In 1975, the department was abolished and its postal functions were taken over by the Australian Postal Commission. The organisation's current name and structure were adopted in 1989 as part of a process of corporatisation.

    Interesting historical facts

    - The first organisation of a postal service in Australia commenced in 1809 with the appointment in Sydney of the first Postmaster. An English ex-convict, Isaac Nichols, took the post operating from his home in Sydney.

His main job was to take charge of letters and parcels arriving by ship, to avoid the chaos of people rushing aboard ships as soon as they arrived at Sydney's wharves. Nichols would pick up the mail and post a list of recipients outside his house.

He would advertise in the Sydney Gazette the names of all those who received mail. Recipients paid a fixed price of one shilling per letter to collect mail from Nichols' home, with parcels costing more depending on how heavy they were. VIP addressees were afforded personal delivery by Nichols.

    - Under amendments to the Australian Postal Corporation Act which came into effect in March 2008, quarantine inspection officers of a state or territory are authorised to request Australia Post to open packets and parcels sent from interstate for inspection when inspectors believe they may contain quarantine material.

The legislation also authorises Australia Post to remove any mail articles that are suspected of being scam mail.
